Week 1
- Our first visit to the Jinhua orphanage on October 25th was a success! At 1:00 pm, fifteen of us squeezed together in a small van for the 30 minute journey, along old dirt roads and paved roads, to the orphanage in the outskirts of southeastern Jinhua. We arrived earlier than expected and were told to wait outside because most of the children were still taking their afternoon naps. When the children opened their eyes and walked down stairs to where we were waiting, they were greeted with unfamiliar faces and the unfamiliar sounds of English. It didn't take long for the children to get acquainted with us, and within minutes they were playing games, coloring, and singing songs with our students! We all had a wonderful time and are looking forward to our visit next week! I would like to thank everyone who volunteered: Alison, Danny, Will, Susan, Violet, Jody, Shway, Elaine, Sally, Vida, Amanda, Amily, Katie & Michael.
Week 2
- Local concerns of the H1N1 virus have escalated since last week and when we arrived at the orphanage today we were greeted with news that we could not see the children. As the director was telling us this, we stood in the hall disappointed, listening to every word. And in our hands were all of the gifts that we brought for the children. Seeing these gifts in our hands, along with our disappointed faces, the director finally agreed to let us see the children for 20 minutes. In the end, things worked out alright, although we're not sure how things will go next week. Let's hope that this H1N1 media scare goes away soon!
